When my Lhasa Apso was three or four months old she succeeded in finding a previously unknown patch of burrs in the backyard and spent time playing in it for awhile. By the time she came back to the house the burrs had worked their way firmly into places on her face, her ears and her little behind.
It was evening so the Vet was already closed and a visit to the animal hospital would certainly have been very expensive. So she was subjected to my tearful yet laughing efforts as I was able to one by one manipulate those burrs out of her hair as she resisted and yelped for more than two hours. They were matted so seriously and up next to the skin that cutting them out was not an alternative.
A tranquilizer of some sort would have been ideal but I didn't have anything at all for her. Since there was no blood or major injury, taking a trip to the emergency hospital was a choice ... that time.
That is a saddening yet interesting story to share and hopefully an experience she has forgotten over time. It was also a little thing although painful and stressful for both of us. But it might have been more serious.
As a conscientious pet owner you will need to know at least basic first aid for dogs so you can be prepared for more life-threatening emergencies. You will often be able to save on Vet fees for minor problems like the one I had. But you may possibly need to be able to help minimize your pup's pain or carry out life-saving actions until you can get to the Vet.
